I worked on the TV show, The Death of Bunny Munro with Nick  Cave and Matt  Smith

I was brought onto the project to give Matt Smith one‑to‑one vocal coaching for a scene in Episode 6 where performs a cover of Elvis’ ‘Always on My  Mind’ at Proud Cabaret in Brighton.

Last year, I was approached by a production company to work one-to-one with Matt Smith on a scene in The Death of Bunny Munro, a brand new six part TV show for Sky Originals. The Death of Bunny Munro is a novel by Nick Cave: a darkly comic, stylish and surprising story of a sex addict, door-to-door beauty product salesman and self-professed lothario Bunny who finds himself saddled with his young son after his wife Libby’s suicide.

As Matt’s vocal coach, I worked with him on a pivotal scene towards the end of the series where his character sings a version of Always On My Mind by Elvis to his departed lover. We were really focused on getting the most out of the song, I wanted to help Matt explore his vocal toolkit to really bring out the character's complex feelings in this scene. We deconstructed the song technically: word by word, exploring ways to make the sounds easier for Matt as the singer. We also looked at it from an emotive point of view, looking at dynamics, playing with different ways of singing each section until Matt felt like he was able to express what he needed to through the song. Strong technique and emotional energy have to coexist and interact in order for us to truly be able to be present when we sing.
